Poultry Overview

This section presents two introductions to poultry husbandry, keyed to experience level. “The Home Flock for Beginners” is the most beginners-level guide to our approach to keeping poultry. My “Poultry 101” article, “Starting a Small Flock of Chickens,” as a more expansive overview for beginners. Readers who are ready to move beyond the basics will find a wealth of information on specific subjects throughout the Poultry section. Of course, the best overview of our poultry husbandry is my book The Small-Scale Poultry Flock.

This section also includes pieces of a general, speculative nature—for example, “Poultry Husbandry in a Changed Energy Future,” “The Homestead Flock: Pets or Partners?,” and “Moral Puzzles in the Backyard”, all originally published in Backyard Poultry. ~Harvey, July 25, 2011
