Icelandic hens are not champion layers in comparison with modern layer strains such as Leghorns or Rhode Island Reds. However, they lay very well for such a self-sufficient breed, and might well out-perform other breeds in a situation where they were solely dependent on foraging to support laying. Note the crest on this hen, an example of the extreme diversity of this landrace: Some Icies have crests, some do not.
