Here I am laying down a “kill mulch” over an existing pasture sod in preparation for new plantings along a fence line. Scrap cardboard is laid down first, and is covered by a thick layer of deep litter from the poultry house—a mix of pulverized poultry manure, vermicomposting bedding, and finely shredded oak leaves. In addition to smothering the pasture cover, the mulch will greatly enrich and loosen the soil.
