Other parts of the Livestock section (especially Poultry!) have information about working with particular livestock species. In this Overview section I hope to develop more general themes regarding the “fit” of livestock in the homestead and farm—and indeed in the broader local ecology. If we avoid the horrible industrial paradigms for raising food animals (in CAFOs—“confined animal feeding operations”), can livestock husbandry play a regenerative role in sustainable agriculture?
Because the killing animals for food can raise such strong opinions and intense emotions, perhaps a good place to start is with a brief discussion of the moral questions involved.
